Disordered Culture: Raising Body-Confident Kids in a Digital World

A Live Q&A with Dietitian Rachael Wilson & Sex Therapist Jo Robertson

We live in a disordered culture - one that normalises self-criticism, moralises food, and idealises filtered, curated images of “perfection.”Our children are growing up surrounded by unrealistic beauty standards, influencer “wellness,” and constant screen exposure and it’s shaping how they see themselves, their bodies, and even their relationship with food.

As parents, we want to protect our kids, but it’s hard to know where to start. Do we limit screen time? Do we comment on influencers? What do we say when our child calls themselves “fat”? Or when they start skipping meals because of something they saw online?

Join Rachael Wilson, paediatric and eating disorder dietitian, and Jo Robertson, sex therapist and online safety advocate, for Disordered Culture an open, honest, and practical Q&A-style workshop unpacking the digital influences shaping kids’ body image, food relationships, and self-worth.

Together, they’ll explore:

  • How diet culture shows up in kids’ screens - from “What I eat in a day” videos to “glow-up” trends

  • The early signs of body dissatisfaction and disordered eating linked to online exposure

  • What to do when your child compares their body or food choices to people online

  • How to respond when they say things like:

    • “I look fat in this.”

    • “I saw a video about cutting out sugar.”

    • “Everyone at school is on a diet.”

    • “That influencer only eats ‘clean’ food.”

  • Setting healthy boundaries around screen time without power struggles or shame

  • Helping kids develop media literacy and body trust in a world of filters and algorithms

  • Fostering resilience, curiosity, and critical thinking around what they see online

This workshop combines Rachael’s expertise in responsive feeding and body image with Jo’s work in digital culture, sexuality, and safety, offering parents a roadmap to raise confident, body-positive, and digitally aware kids.

Here's what other parents are saying...

I’m a huge fan of The Food Tree and their approach to body image and fostering a positive relationship with food. They’re informative, knowledgeable, helpful, and gentle. I’ve attended several of their workshops, and each time I leave with new tools to create a positive environment for my children around body image and self-acceptance.

Gemma Vergo

I learned so much from the workshop! Thank you. I feel much more relaxed about how I approach body image discussions with my kids, and they seem more confident in their own skin.
