🍽 Starting Solids with Confidence: Baby-Led Feeding & First Aid Essentials Workshop

Starting solids can be one of the most exciting—but also nerve-wracking—milestones in your baby’s first year. With so much conflicting advice out there, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. What if they choke? How do I know they’re ready? When should I introduce allergens? What if something goes wrong?

This practical, supportive workshop brings together two trusted professionals—Rachael Wilson, NZ’s leading paediatric dietitian, and Shrenika from Little Beat First Aid, a currently practicing paediatric nurse and emergency care instructor—for a one-of-a-kind session that empowers you to start solids safely, confidently, and calmly.

🥄 What You’ll Learn with Rachael:

Rachael has been a dietitian for over 21 years, specialising in paediatric nutrition, feeding disorders, and body image. She’ll help you take the stress out of starting solids by focusing on how to feed responsively and safely.

You’ll learn:

  • How to tell when your baby is developmentally ready to start solids

  • What to feed and how to offer foods safely (including high-allergy-risk foods)

  • How to introduce texture and variety

  • Responsive feeding strategies that build body trust and enjoyment

  • How to prevent iron deficiency

  • When and how to introduce common allergens

  • How to create positive, pressure-free mealtimes from the start

  • Practical tips on food prep, utensils, and high chair essentials

  • How to raise a competent, mindful eater from the very first bite

  • Food prep tips, practical equipment advice, and building positive mealtime habits

🚑 With Shrenika (Little Beat First Aid), you’ll learn:

As a currently practicing paediatric nurse of over 15 years and emergency care instructor certified by the New Zealand Resuscitation Council, Shrenika will focus specifically on the safety concerns most relevant to starting solids.

Her portion of the session will cover:

  • Infant and child CPR

  • Choking first aid and what to do in an emergency

  • Choking prevention tips and common hazard foods

  • Recognising signs of allergic reactions and anaphylaxis

  • First aid for allergies and anaphylaxis (including when to call 111)

  • Bonus topic: Red flags of an unwell child—what to watch for beyond mealtimes

You’ll also receive follow-up resources by email covering all of these key topics and more, so you can review the information in your own time.

Note: Shrenika will focus on recognising allergic reactions and providing first aid support—Rachael will cover the timing and approach for introducing allergens.

Many parents say that fear of choking or allergic reactions is the main reason they delay starting solids or feel anxious about baby-led weaning. This session is tailored to address those fears directly—so you can go into mealtimes feeling calm, capable, and prepared.

🌿 Why This Workshop is Different:

This isn’t just another feeding talk or a first aid course. It’s a full-circle experience that covers both how to feed your baby well and what to do if something goes wrong—so you’re never left second-guessing yourself.

I’m a huge fan of The Food Tree and their approach to body image and fostering a positive relationship with food. They’re informative, knowledgeable, helpful, and gentle. I’ve attended several of their workshops, and each time I leave with new tools to create a positive environment for my children around body image and self-acceptance.

I learned so much from the workshop! Thank you. I feel much more relaxed about how I approach body image discussions with my kids, and they seem more confident in their own skin.
